Welcome to the Vermont State Rail Program

The goal of the Agency of Transportation Rail Program is to promote the efficient and effective operation of the state’s rail system so that it can be a seamless, competitive, interconnected and integrated element of the national multi-modal transportation system. This goal recognizes the social, economic, and environmental importance of rail to that system.

The freight railroads provide the basic structure for the system and support, where appropriate, the development of a passenger rail network that meets the state's needs.

The Rail Program assists in the development of opportunities for the shippers and receivers of rail freight in the state and is also responsible for the Amtrak/Vermont Intercity Passenger Rail partnership.
